Counting Our Blessings of the Past Year

As we have been enjoying a quiet Christmas in a warm, clean house I have been reflecting on the different situation we were in last Christmas and counting my blessings. In early December 2007, we had a plumbing leak in the kitchen that ruined the entire front wall of the kitchen. The wall had to come out and be completely replaced. It was a stinky, dirty mess. Heavy duty plastic separated the dining room from the construction zone. We moved the fridge into the dining room, the microwave onto the table, and bought a shelf for all our dishes and food. For three months we cooked, cleaned and ran Josh's home school out of a cramped dining room and washed dishes in the bathtub.

The mess we found when we removed the cabinets.

The leak was inside this wall. Water was leaking through the pipe and the brick and coming out the wall into the kitchen.

The rotten pipe that started the whole problem.

Because the entire wall was was being replaced, we made the decision to move the wall out farther in the front giving us extra room in the kitchen. Here, you can see the entry way where original wall was and the new wall being reconstructed in the background.

Then the concrete floor was poured in the new area.

The cabinets came the end of Febrary. Countertops in March. The floors were done in July.

Finally, A completely new, beautiful kitchen. We love the final results. We spend more time together in the kitchen than we ever imagined we would. I feel like it's been Christmas all year round as we've added the stove, dishwasher, microwave, and other things that bring it all together. Little by little we've made it a place where we love to be.

Breakfast together Christmas morning!
